Between 1989 and 1992 I visited Romania five times working both as a photographer on my own and with an organisation called Creative Aid for Romania. Creative Aid would spend time in orphanages, hospitals, hospices and old people's homes painting murals, holding art workshops and performing basic art therapy.

These images are a small part of a collection that was exhibited around the Uk at the time, including in London, Brighton and Norwich.

All my photographs are developed and printed by me in the darkroom. All images are framed in the camera at the time of taking and no cropping whatsoever takes place during printing. I have been using the same 24mm lens since around 1989 as well as the same make of camera - A nikkormat.

I am currently working on self publishing a book of landscapes called 'West of the Sun' and am looking for funding for the book and accompanying exhibition. Please visit my website for more information, to view further images or to read my news and blog section.

Thanks.

An unsettling but fascinating image, Toby. The grain, the tilt of the bed, the scratched-away paint from the frame all help to emphasise the apparent bleakness and hopelessness of this scene.

I can only echo the comments Ian has made. A very moving and thought provoking image.
Seeing your images here directed me to your website. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit there.
