Portrait of Marcin, a friend of ours, taken in one of the nicest pubs in Toruń, Poland, during our last visit over there, last year. The guys were playing chess and I was trying to capture the atmosphere of our meeting ![]()
I'm really unsure about this one and might get tempted to delete it. I like it because I think its mood fits Marcin very well, just sums up what kinda person is he. No clue if it's any good for someone who doesn't know him though. Would really appreciate a honest critique.
Thank you for your time.

The selective focus here really accentuates how focussed he is on the board.

Its a very good shot without knowing Marcin!
Composition of very good, - theres a diagonal from his eyes down through the board to the corner; the board and his pose make 2 triangles; the chess pieces are unusual, and you featured them well; the exposure is good enough to capture the reflections in the chess board; the desaturated colour lends a slightly dark mood to the shot, but with just enough for the yellow crown on the king to stand out; the blur does focus the attention, but it also suggests movement, - looks like a motion blur to me?

I must admit that I find portraits hard to critique. With landscapes you can look at the composition, rule of thirds, quality of light, foreground interest, lead-in etc, but with portraits I just think "does this look right". And this does. Your post-processing has enhanced the shot and your friend can only be pleased with the result.
