First of all, thank you all for your enormous help and time on my last upload, L'explorateur. You are a wonderful lot passing on your views and I only hope I can benefit from your good advice. More trepidation this evening with another attempt at a still life - and I would love to have your views, bad and good, if you have the time and the inclination! ![]()
I hope you all had a great Christmas. I think it would be true to say that I've eaten and drunk a bit too much.

The hessian makes a great backcloth, Ann, and the cloves are beautifully arranged and lit. The slight vignette adds the finishing touch. Not something I've ever tried but this still life looks pretty damn good to me.
Dave
I like the set up Ann - nice grouping . Something to think about - a lighter alternative.
Done a quick mod in PS. Adj Shadow/highlight and a bit of mid tone contrast to give a bit more shape to the cloves. Brushed the bg with the blur brush at 15% to try and add a bit more depth. Might not be what you wanted but I thought it worth a try.![]()
Brian.

Now Ann we're getting somewhere.
This I like - love the textured b/g and apparent casual arrangement.
I do like bricurtis's slightly adjusted lighting (Not my strong point).
I'll look back to see what other's think but I think this is your best to date.
Don't know if Trev will be back yet to give you a mark?

Well shot, nicely arranged - when I think of garlic I always think rustic, and the background fits right into that theme.

Dave says it perfectly Ann, I love the hessian background, it works a treat!
love the back cloth
as a garlic grower and eater love the topic
and your presentation with the vignette works a dream
what more can one say ?
I think this is a very good arrangement of the garlic cloves and the hessian works well with the subject. The left side may be a little tight and a fraction more room could have been given to the composition, but that's a question of one persons view over another. The mod was done to produce a more sculptural, 3-dimensional feel using dodge and burn techniques to deepen the shadows and accentuate the highlights. It's just another interpretation from your very good photo.
Alan.

fine texture and very natural tones captured here Ann fine work

A good shot. It does benefit with a little more exposure to make the Garlic "come forward" from the background, and have the shiny places appear shiny; I would suggest the upside-down root doesnt add anything and could be removed; and a little blur on the background would be a good idea. Uploaded a mod with this done,
Regards
Willie

Fantastic piece of Work Ann, you've done VERY well here.

Cracking shot !!!.....great subject & b/g, with lovely textures, detail & colours.....1st class !!
But I couldn't resist a mod. !.......I've 'defocused' the b/g sackcloth a bit, & induced a bit more contrast to create
a nice firm pair (?), with a bit a local sharpening, & a hint of vignette..........tasty !!!.![]()
The net background is perfect for these richly colored garlic cloves-- looks so natural!
As to very bad sonw storms-- not so bad where I live, but the rain/sleet after/over the snow was unwelcome and bad for anyone who had to drive----melting now!
Thanks for your concern.
You have done very well with this one Ann. The composition and lighting generally are excellent although I think that darkening and defocusing the background allows the eye to focus on the subject better and creates a more atmospheric image.

First off, that is BEAUTIFUL looking garlic and I would love to finely mince a clove for a blue cheese omelette...mmmm.
Getting to the pic now...lol ![]()
Ok...the set up and light are wonderful...but for me, the sack like material as a backdrop has too much texture. Too rough. Something finer/softer and less distracting would draw my eyes more to the garlic. Not just something finer/softer but a wee bit lighter in hue too.
Still a very fetching still life, Ann.

Apologies for not voting or commenting earlier... but from the looks of it you didn't need my imput!
(I have now connected to your portfolio now as the images dissapear so quickly off the gallery pages) I think this is a cracking shot and would not dare to comment on the tecnical aspect which from my pov is excellent. If I were permitted a small observation, there is something about the top right hand corner that I find keeps leading me back to it and I think I'd rather be led to the single cloves bottom left. My initial thought was just to remove that clove with the root facing completely, but I know that these club judges love their threes, so maybe by darkening down that white root a little it would just balance up the image.
I will be searching out some sacking material and garlic myself now... but knowing me I might have to add a crucifix...... wooden stake... silver tipped bullet..... Oh stop it!!!!!
