As you all know by now! After 30+ years owning a studio, I hate doing portraits, my friend asked if I would photograph his Son as a big favour, this is the result. I used one Nikon SB800 off camera fired by built in camera flash with defuser attached, and positioned to get a rembrant ligting effect, one white reflector to throw light back in to shadow.

I think it works so well ... that lighting is so good
He is such a good looking lad I hope you did some without the hand ... seems to dominate his wonderful face
good eye detail like the lighting and the focus used ![]()

Great focus used and those eyes are very detailed. Agree with Barbara about the hand but I assume this is how you wanted it.
Like still life I find portraiture a little beyond my limited knowledge and on nights at camera club I see the lights getting set up and we are normally instructed what settings to use so haven't really got much of an understanding on lighting n stuff so my efforts are rather hit n miss...can appreciate though that it is not just a point n shoot exercise for those that have to do it to earn a crust.
PS Was wadered n waist deep with the camera locked onto a rock in the middle of a pool to attain detail at that speed...you should see my shakey hand held shots...they are works of abstract art...lol ![]()
Strange how the portrait stuff allways comes back to haunt one
~ Hope your friend was happy with that result.
Nice one mate
Doc

Trev.
never attempted portraiture but might give it a go sometime, harder than it looks from what I see taking place at our local club - you have done good with this shot
