I went back to the harbour with a tripod which made shooting more relaxing. It didn't solve all the low light problems though, because to get crisp reflections you still need a relatively short shutterspeed. Also, as I discovered after several frustrating attempts at getting a detail sharp, the boats are often moving slightly to an almost invisible current. Fortunately there were enough sharp ones to have made the revisit worthwhile
A big thank you to Brian for his much appreciated user award on Mirage !
