Hi Kevin,
Theres elements of a good composition here, but Im not certail if they rae al in the right place at the right time.
I like how the rain drops on the water have been captured, and the tree making a frame is nice, - but is not really framing anything other than the bright part of the lake.
the ducks are a nice touch, but their porition, and the trunk of the tree dividing the shot really suggests a crop, - and in my mod, moving the ducks over to the right.
I looked at a crop to retain the ducks in their original position, but it ends up with the tree in the middle, - and doesnt look great.
I dont think a flash would do a lot for you. You can always pop up the one on the camera, and it will act as a fill flash (you might have to ne in Aperture priority or shutter, - not certain about M mode on a Nikon), this would illuminate some of the foreground, but if you want to lift the shadows, you need to do it in post processing. I personally like the almost silhouette effect, however, I did increase shadow detail in the mod, and also extended the grass at the bottom down to fill the frame, as the mucky path becomes clear when shadows are lightened.
Anyway, - hope this is of some help. If you are at all gamiliar with Photoshop, - to move the ducks, lassoo them, the copy and paste them, then use the move tool to locate them where you want. is you then use a layer mask, you can clean up some of the background around the ducks,
Regards
Willie

What can I say!! this is the first time I have used constructive critique and didnt relise how much help is out there.
Will be using this again instead of just looking for points.
I really do like the modifications to this image!! its amazing the things you can do.
Thank you very much..........walk8
hi, its a nice composition although the tree is a little over dominant and heavy in relationship to everything else.
i like the colour in the background trees and particlarly the fact that there is a gap in the centre adding some light into the frame. compositionally it would have been very fortunate if the group of ducks had been in the bright area just to the right of the tree. the exposure has been handled well.
i think id leave the width as it is but take off some from the top.
regards
Phil
Mod 1 is very much better. The tree, in your version, is far too black and dominent. It should be the foil to the scene, and needs to be on the left edge. You should look past the tree. There is a fine shot in here, but I would also like the ducks to have been right of the tree - compositionally - impossible now I know.

Trees are an excellent way of framing a subject, but in order to do that they have to be located at the frame edge; anywhere else and they tend to split a picture up. So I go along with the first mod. which really does enhance the composition. One small thing, for landscapes such as this, I would prefer an aspect ratio of 6:4 which is closer to your original, jus that small adjustment at the time of exposure would have made all the difference.
Given your camera settings, it must have been very dull whilst you were there, otherwise I would be suggesting using a much smaller aperture. That could still happen if you used a tripod, but of course the ducks would be shown up as blurs as the paddled their way across the water. For some reason your ISO does no show in your EXIF but maybe upping it would permit a faster shutter speed along with the smaller aperture mentioned earlier.
