Just an hour to go... My last day on the job.
Early retirement; not my idea.
Doctor's orders. Heart condition.

This all came about from a conversation on another forum. Someone was asking how to achieve a Sin City style of look - lots of people mentioned actions and plugins, but nobody gave much thought to the lighting.

So, out with the boys yesterday, and when Ade and Matt finally got bored of posing me, I took my own turn behind the camera, and attempted to recreate the look - or something close to it.

Ade's sitting on a metal crash barrier. I've got an SB-800 on camera in commander mode providing some forward fill. There are another two speedlights behind Ade, 45 degrees either side and above, providing the main lighting.

Processed the RAW file & imported to Photoshop - did a quick 'n' dirty mono conversion, a bit of dodging and burning and an overlay layer with a slight red tone to complete the effect.

Was is successful? You decide...

yes! very Sin City. it works very well.

perhaps a little less fill, so has to have more defintion from the harsh side lights, maybe giving some darker eye sockets etc.

Sidelights a touch further back .. don't want too much spill onto the nose and essentially a slimmer strip of light would make it a touch more 3D ... lower the fill output a dash too ... also might lower the height of the side lights slightly.

Other than that not bad Wink

Don't know what a sin city look is meant to be but this is certainly a very arresting image, it caught my attention straight from the thumbnail.

Thanks Jim.
Sin City was a film, a couple of years back I think. I was originally a comic book/graphic novel, and it was shot in a very stylised way - very dark, harsh shadows, not entirely black and white but very desaturated, that kinda thing. A Google image search for "Sin City" should show up the kind of thing I mean.

I look lovely Smile

quite like the hood - that looks pretty cool with the furry bits.

the ones I did of matt are similaraly scary, though not edited those just yet.

One to try again - maybe get the rear lights low then point them up...

Sin City is a great film, The Spirit is out now, made by the same people, it has the same sort of style and look to it.
