A fly having a drink shot just after rain. Tripod shot macro image at just over 1:1. Sigma 150mm EX lens on manual focus - focused by setting lens at closest focusing distance, then move camera on focusing rack - a device like the old focusing movement on a plate camera. EOS 7D with ring flash and 1/200 @ f18 on manual. +2 compensation on flash by experience and check of LCD.
Leaves very relective and flare a problem?

Hi Paul
first well done - that's not easy.
second for me the flare detracts from the fly, but i notice that there are very strong lines of light across the highest parts of the fly. Would it have been possible to do this without the flash? Did you use the highlighting thing on the camera to check which parts of image were over exposed and then alter the settings?
Or if i have an image with an over exposed section like that i use the horizon tool and alter it to remove it if that's possible.
good luck with it.

I have the highlight indication tool set but the problem is the shiny leaf surface and exposing for that would make the image impossibly dark. Flash is almost mandatory to get the depth of field when this close and in the field. The problem is exposure at iso100 and f18 with a live moving subject. A reasonably fast shutter speed is needed.
Catch 22.
Paul
