This is Chris Simpson of Magna Carta (see my blog entry of today), as photographed during a concert in Druten, this weekend.

I realise that this cannot be the most flattering picture of him, especially with his eyes almost completely closed, but it shows something about him that I like - here he's the musician/songwriter who renders the lyrics from deep within his soul. Chris feels deeply about the lyrics that he writes and sings, and it shows.

One tiny detail that I like about the original on my computer, but which unfortunately you will hardly be able to see, even in the 1000 pixel version, is the drop of sweat that's just fallen from a hair over his ear.

This is almost straight from the camera. No crop, and very little processing - hardly any more than a modest clean-up of the picture. I didn't even want to put a frame around it and decided to upload it "pure".

Shot at 1600 ISO, 1/500, F2.8.

I considered a mono conversion, but he has good skin tones, I really like the blue light on the microphone stand, and I don't think this is too grainy or noisy for a colour shot.

But do tell me what you all think of it - all comments and mods welcome!

Thanks for the mod, Gary. He does indeed look a bit red (but that's normal for him).

With all that expression Conrad I wonder if this would show his character even more in B&W?

You're welcome Conrad. Smile Maybe he should lay off the sherry then?

Ah, oh, there's a critique to go with the mod! Spotted the mod first. I did wonder why the picture had got a yellow thingy around it in my folio...

Thanks for the detailed critique, Gary, as well as the mod! I'm so used to seeing him in red, that I never thought of turning it down a notch. Excellent idea. The crop is just simply the result of not being able to step back where I was at that moment - and using a prime 200mm lens. Maybe I'll take my zoom next time. Heavier, but who knows, maybe it's handier.

The band's website is indeed the purpose I had in mind. Not sure yet if Chris will approve the image, but that was indeed the intended purpose.

Thanks very much, Gary, I'm very happy with your evaluation, mod and suggestions!

Red wine and tomato juice, actually, but yes... Wink

I did consider that, but my b&w conversions are rubbish...

Thanks everyone!
