My dad lit a fire in his back garden last night so I thought i'd grab my camera and tripod and see what kind of pics i could get of the flames as an expirement. He did give me a funny look at the time. I've put on a few variants as I was playing about with the pic in lightroom.

All three very well done but for me the mono is the outstanding one.

I prefer the warmer V2, it just seems more firey to me.
I think you lose something in the translation to B&W.
