A King Protea (King Cynaroides) from our garden today...I waited until the sun touched the petals.... The protea is our National flower as well as being the name and emblem of our National Cricket team. This bush has about 100 proteas flowering at present and is a sight to behold. They grow wild in the Western Cape and their are many as 81 family garden varieties. Proteas are from an ancient plant system, and do not have petals but sepals. They are fine example of the african fynbos... They are bird pollenated. I have also uploaded a few images of the other proteas on the bush.

These are excellent photos Colleen !! I still have to get to them with my camera Smile A lovely day here as well - a bit windy though! It is so difficult to choose a Miss Protea 2013 from these beauties - may V1 and V4 can share the title Smile

Fantastic set of images Colleen; V2 and 5 look as though there are big diamonds encased in the Sepals. Brilliant use of light and as always, so stylishly presented.

a lovely series, what a great flower.
maybe a bit more DOF might help here. you don't really need 100 iso, it doesn't help with macro. We usually try to get a smaller aperture to get more detail and DOF.Smile
No I'm not nagging, just trying to say how to improve a picture with fantastic light and composition..

Just a follow up to annetteps comment.

Its 1/1000 shutter speed you dont need, - it can be slower, and this would allow a smaller aperture, like f/8 - f/11 for improved depth of field. This exif applies only to the first image, so I dont know if you used the same settings for all of them. Using ISO 200 would allow you to go to f/11 safely, and maintain a high enough shutter speed for the focal length, at least 1/500.

Another point is that when in M mode, using exposure compensation (-2/3) has NO effect at all, - you need to control this with shutter speed, aperture or ISO as the camera leaves it all up to you. If you used an aperture or shutter priority mode, the exposure compensation would allow the camera to change the settng you have no chosen to control. Worth keeping in mind.

heres a link with information on depth of field, and how it interacts with focal length, distance to sibject, etc, and it allows you to enter the shot detail for your camera and lens:

http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

All nice shots, sharp and detailed.

regards

Willie
