Here's another picture from the Hexham Morris dance-out last week. So far I have concentrated rather heavily on a small bearded individual, who seems to have gained quite a following, but I promised a new face for today's upload.
This is the Hexham Morris Fool. Every Morris team has its official Fool (as well as a number of unofficial ones.)
The Fool's job is to get in the dancers' way, create mayhem and embarrass spectators. The dancers themselves are quite capable of doing all that if required, but for the Fool it is his sole purpose in life. As you can see he takes his responsibilities very seriously.
I think the next upload will be the Big Cheese...
As always, thanks for looking.
Moira

Very seriously; cogs ticking! Hatching some mischievous scheme for playing the fool, no doubt.

Good portrait. Caught his expression well. But how can he appear so serious in a hat like that?

Thanks folks, and I'm sure Jeremy Irons would be very flattered...
I should have added that this is only half the original shot as I cropped the other figure out. A small, bearded person with glasses. Like I said yesterday, he got into almost every picture I took...

He looks as if his hands must be tied behind his back.

Why do they all seem as if they are really not enjoying life - this morris dancing is their hobby, surely one of them must look as if he enjoys it Wink

Oh poor sad man - how could you expose his deepest feelings like this? With no problem at all I think - a great image.

The write up makes interesting reading. A well timed candid that has captured him in a more serious mode.

I didn't know about every team having a 'fool', perhaps they work under cover sometimes. You couldn't have a 'plain clothes' fool could you...?
