On Portland, they are honured to have a musical concept entitled " Harmonic Fields."

The exhibit features over 150 instruments, placed throughout the cliff & quarry area of Bowers Portland Stone Quarry.

Portland is know for its high winds & rugged & somewhat surreal landscape, & the instruments placed throughout are played only by the winds themselves!!

I asked the lady in version 2 to who was one of the concept guides, if I could take a photo of her.
Her reply , in a whispery voice was " No....it is only for memoriessssssssssssssssssssssss! "

All of the photo is there, it.s not manipulated other thanusual adjustments....it really is all rather Dali-esque.

Therfore, I took a picture of her from behind as a compromise.

The concept is only in place for one week, it moves Sunday evening....please, if you get the chance..go..it's one of the best , mos magical things I;ve ever seen & heard.

Gareth

Yes Gareth the wind plays music in many ways going way back mainly wind chimes, but some stack different width tubes to let the wind blow through it gives quite a hunting sound as does the wind through a gap in an old window, I think this was the beginning of flutes and pipes as in the Andes and Peru, very interesting set of photo's like them, regards Leon.GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

That is quite surreal and unusual, I love the response from the lady, very intrigiung. Sadly I won't get there so it is great you have shared because this is one of the more unusual and human interesting stories I have heard for a while - thanks Steve

Very unusual set of images Gareth - looks like a bit of a dreamscape. Sometimes they have sound installations at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Love the composition of image 1.

Thankyou John, the others are just snaps to show what is/was there (last day today)..... but I do rather like v1..I need to learn to clone out, so that I can get rid of the people..it would have a touch of a Pink Floyd cover about it then.

Gareth thank you for sharing this wonderful concept with us - I love music made by wind power and to see so many different items used as "instruments of sound and sight" is uplifting - wish they would do something like this on the Marsh as we have lots n lots of wind going spare ...
