After a century spent wandering the roads of Northumberland carrying the coffin of St Cuthbert, the monks of Lindisfarne stumble, somewhat dazed, into a modern precinct in Durham City.
This is Fenwick Lawson's wonderful The Journey, one of my favourite sculptures. The hands have always fascinated me, they seem so gentle, caring. This is the first of three uploads, gradually moving out into the surrounding precinct.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

A beautiful piece Moira, which can be viewed at from a whole range of perspectives. "Do we admire the craftsmanship, or do we try to unravel the meaning behind the hand gesture?" Or. "Is it the hand of a beggar, or is the hand a sign of help and hope?"
Regards Nathan
Two fantastic images Mira, wonderful detail and great textures and tones.

Thanks folks. Jeff, I have faces to come.
I find a different angle every time I visit this work, I really would recommend it to anyone in the North East.

V1 looks so gentle and welcoming .. what a shock to see V2
Quote: Almost mono in their appearance, but the hint of colour makes for a more interesting pair of images, in my view.
I tried b&w conversions but felt that they lost something - the tones in the sculpture are subtle and change according to the light, sometimes very blue, sometimes more reddish.
Thanks again, everyone.

Isn't it wonderful that whenever you re-visit a sculpture like this you see things that you hadn't noticed before - this certainly does convey gentleness in-spite of rough angular lines ![]()

The cupping hand, the diagonal of the arm and the wonderful light.A great crop too which accentuates all of the aforementioned, a beautiful image worthy of a large print Moira.
Dougie
Two lovely balanced 'crops', and well exposed to show the detail. A handsome image!

The daze was all that mead they were drinking.....Steve
Barbara, the sculpture spent some time on Holy Island before being moved to Durham a few years ago.
Thanks everyone. I should add that V2 is in this instance more for information/amplification, as I have uploaded head-and-shoulder shots before.

I thought I recognised this Moira - it's one of my favourite pieces of artwork too! I am looking forward to more!

Seeing it close up like this really shows the wonderful detail. Like both versions, but think V1 wins it for me ![]()
