Another mono conversion (without the use of B&W plugins), this time from Land's End in Cornwall.

A very nice 'unplugged' mono Paul.
Are you printing much B&W at the moment by the way?
Mike
Thanks guys!

No Mike, just fancied developing my work a little more in that direction - not as easy as I'd thought!
Quote: come on... tell us why you seem to have developed a hang-up about mono plug-in's all of a sudden? And whats the technique your using instead? B&W layer masking in CS?
Not really a hang up Adam, I just wondered if I could do the job equally well without the use of Nik/Topaz etc - it's all too easy to push a button on a plugin and be done with it, but I've found that recently people are just using the presets and they are starting to all look the same. As to my approach, google contrast grading and you should get the idea

up till quite recently I'd done all my mono conversions entirely in PS, typically using a LAB mode method of conversion which produced very little in the way of unwanted noise and allowed considerable further contrast adjustments using layers. Recently though I've been using silver Efex Pro. I still find myself using this in conjunction with PS which I guess hopefully helps avoid the obvious 'oh he's used that preset' look. I also love the natural, intuitive way that Efex allows you to be creative. It's a great piece of software
sorry I missed your call Paul - was engaged in critical kitchen duties ![]()
I think it was you who put me on Efex Pro actually. To be honest I've still only just scratched the surface of what it can do. I do love the control points function!
A dramatic and beautiful seascape with expertly judged tones as always.
Phil.
Another very good monochrome conversion done the hard way. Like the long exposure effect on the original. By chance I was out yesterday afternoon down the River Clyde shooting some 10x images mtself. I'll post something soon. We don't have such dramatic coast lines as Cornwall close to hand sadly.

Superb composition and conversion, masterfully done. Deserves the HC IMO
Great scene and a nice conversion Paul, top quality work as always. Rgds Paul
