Classic black 'n white landscape.

A very nice 'unplugged' mono Paul.

Are you printing much B&W at the moment by the way?

Another lovely job Paul. But come on... tell us why you seem to have developed a hang-up about mono plug-in's all of a sudden? And whats the technique your using instead? B&W layer masking in CS?

No Mike, just fancied developing my work a little more in that direction - not as easy as I'd thought!

Not really a hang up Adam, I just wondered if I could do the job equally well without the use of Nik/Topaz etc - it's all too easy to push a button on a plugin and be done with it, but I've found that recently people are just using the presets and they are starting to all look the same. As to my approach, google contrast grading and you should get the idea

Superb mate, love the contrast between the rocks and sea in the mid ground, just stunning mono Wink

Regards
Tim

up till quite recently I'd done all my mono conversions entirely in PS, typically using a LAB mode method of conversion which produced very little in the way of unwanted noise and allowed considerable further contrast adjustments using layers. Recently though I've been using silver Efex Pro. I still find myself using this in conjunction with PS which I guess hopefully helps avoid the obvious 'oh he's used that preset' look. I also love the natural, intuitive way that Efex allows you to be creative. It's a great piece of software

I was referring more to the default sepia/heavy vignette kind of look that you often see - screams Nik Silver Effex

Got to be careful with that "structure" function though, it can make things look a bit inky.

Cheers
Paul

sorry I missed your call Paul - was engaged in critical kitchen duties Smile

I think it was you who put me on Efex Pro actually. To be honest I've still only just scratched the surface of what it can do. I do love the control points function!

Yes Mike, used properly - as you do it's a great tool Smile

I just thought I'd have a go and see what could be done without the plugins, nice to know that if I was left with just Photoshop I could still manage some sort of a workflow.

Cheers
Paul

Another very good monochrome conversion done the hard way. Like the long exposure effect on the original. By chance I was out yesterday afternoon down the River Clyde shooting some 10x images mtself. I'll post something soon. We don't have such dramatic coast lines as Cornwall close to hand sadly.
