I think this is a Large Ranunculus, confirmation would be great please!! Smile

Not the best of perches (my arm), but everytime I found it a nice perch it would start walking away - because it was a moth I'd never seen before I really wanted an image of it. As I turned it into the late afternoon sun the orange patches glittered like little flecks of gold! A really pretty effect. Smile

Difficult to tell from the photograph Karen as there is no sense of scale, however I'd have said you were quite right so long as you think the wingspan was about 42-45mm. If not and knowing where you live, although not precisely, it may possibly be a Black Banded - Polymixis xanthomista statices which is a bit smaller with a wingspan of 32-35mm. If it was a Black Banded, it would be an excellent find as they are altogether a much rarer beast, but the two are often confused........I'm more inclined to think it is a L.Rannulus though......Hope this helps?.....Good find either way and a good image too....

Great capture Karen. I have to agree with Ade on the ID of this one. It has very strong similarities to a Small Ranunculus moth which I photographed in my garden a few weeks ago. The orange markings on the wings are quite striking in bright light.
