Quite moody Wynn but maybe a little too sombre. I don't know whether or not you meant it to be darker than it seems it ought to be, but I have uploaded a mod of how I feel that it should be - only you will know. However I do feel that it improves the viewability somewhat.
I am a bit surprised that you chose to use an aperture of f8 for such a wide ranging scene given the focal length of 85mm (127 in old money). With the shutter speed being 1/2500sec you could easily have used f11 @ 1/1250sec or even driopped the ISO to 200 and used 1/600sec.
Your histogram shows slight underexposure, and your exposure compensation is minus one full stop. Given the dark sky perhaps it would have been more prudent to have left it on zero.
My mod seems to show some nice sun rays illuminating the surrounding hills which I hope you approve of.
Frank
Thanks for the interesting treatment.
It was under exposed to reduce the clipping in the high lights then brought back in Photoshop a bit a graduated filter would hold the sky in but do nothing to the bright lake. The lake is possible half a mile away so at depth of field difference between f8 and f11 is small.
Fast shutter speed because I was to laze to get the tripod out on a cold evening and I was shivering.
The Nikon D700 is full frame so 85 lens is still 85. 85 lens is ideal for some lakes Wales.
I find that I like dark images so welcome a different prospective.
Hi Wynn,
I've taken a different tack. I opened it in Lightroom (3.6) because I wanted to use the 'fill light' tool on the foreground and it's worked after a fashion.
The two receding layers of mountains were a bit beyond me at this size though. I tried a few things on a copy and there is some detail in there, lurking beneath the haze. I think that I'd probably use a layer mask, or masks to retrieve it, which you'd find quite easy on your original.
I've also adjusted the colour slightly. I did that in CS6.
I can't help thinking though, that I'm missing something. I'm pretty sure that someone will be along in a minute and show us an easier way!
Hope this helps.
Bren.
