Taken in the Great Tower at Dover Castle.

Dover Castle has recently had a refurbishement in the Great Tower, everything lavishly recreated to look exactly as it would of in Henry II's time. It was expertly done and the colours were amazing, so rich and so warm!

King Henry II was one of England's most powerful monarchs. His family included Richard the Lionheart, 'Bad' King John and his strong-willed wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine - all the notorious subjects of many myths and legends.

The aim of the Great Tower project was to evoke the atmospheric interiors of King Henry II's medieval royal court, creating an immersive world in which the visitor stands at the centre of the experience.
Backed by meticulous research, compelling evidence and an army of skilled craftsmen who have re-created the lavish interiors, from wall hangings, stunning furnishings and over 500 intricate objects, the project is considered the most ambitious attempt to re-create a medieval palace in more than a century.

My thanks as always for your time, your thoughts/comments are very welcome.
Regards - Sarah J x

Wolfy & Joline, thank you!

Joline, I was surprised too at the colours, how rich and vibrant they were! I was told that it was as accurate as could be - the paints for the chairs and bedsteads were mixed from data found on orginal medieval documents.

What a surprising revelation - to think that these famous kings slept in something that looks like a modern kids bedroom (albeit without the central heating and the Playstation). It's a great image, Sarah.

Draughty is what I first thought Sarah ! I always presumed they piled into a giant bed with pigs and servants in order to keep warm.
The gaps in the floorboards and under the door would, at least, have saved them from the fumes of the fireplace !
The temptation to include a bedside clock is quite strong.
Must visit Dover next year.

As you say great colours. In what must have been relatively poor lighting, a remarkable shot.

The colours really pop, Sarah. I must say those beds do not look very inviting, though. Probably filled with hay?
