I found this handsome chappie chomping on a stem of wild fennel in the meadow, I took some images and then decided to see if I could raise a swallowtail butterfly from him. So home he came, with a fistful of fennel flowers and stems, and was popped into a large jam jar. He fed and pooped for about three days, then nothing. Slowly he attached himself to a thick twig, yesterday he shed his skin, and this morning he is a fully fledged chrysalis! I don’t know whether he will emerge this year or next, depending on the temperature here, but if he is going to emerge this year, then hopefully I should have something to report to you in about 10-12 days. Watch this space! V.5 shows the condition he is in now.

I knew it, you are growing your own beasties in a lab.....![]()
What an absolutely stunning creature and beautifully captured (in both meanings of the word). Can't wait to see the results.

A fabulous set of caterpillar and chrysalis close ups Carol, I look forward to seeing what emerges sometime in the future. If this caterpillar has any sense he won't venture out until the spring!
I look forward to reports in this handsome beauty, super series.
Good luck and I do hope you get the result. I did the same thing with an Oleander moth and it emerged flew out of the bathroom window and was caught by next doors cat
and eaten I was heartbroken well I was 11 at the time, I didn't talk to the cat for days.
Well documented shots and I hope you have some pictures of the moth in a couple of weeks time - Helen
Superb head-on, Carol!
A fine set of images and story to go with it. I hope you will be able to catch it emerging, what a set of photos that would be.

Oh Carol............ I did this once when I was about 12, It was one of those fat hairy catterpillars, It emerged as a Red admiral or something similar (not too sure on butterfly names), I set it free after I found it flying around the room, I was so pleased that it hatched out.
Please let us know what happens, good luck![]()
Oh great set, V4 is my fave![]()

This is so exciting, we are all going to eagerly await the outcome.
Carol, these images are amazing, especially V1!!!!!!!!!!!
Can't wait to see what kind of swallowtail it will become. The caterpillar looks much like the ones here.
Anne
Great pics as usual Carol and you show great dedication.
As a child I did a similar thing with some tiny caterpillars in a web on a privet bush.I was very disappointed when they hatched into small moths silver with dots!!
Size is important in this case ,usually the bigger the caterpillar the bigger the moth!!
Best wishes Robert, from a miserable wet UK.
