As I was walking over the sea ice I heard a loud intake of breath in the still cold air and turned around to spot this Minke whale surfacing through a melt hole in the ice. It was quite a distance from open water and took plenty of time to replenish it's oxygen supply! Location just off Ross Island, East Antarctica.

OOOH! Love the position and the echoing shaped ice towers behind. Only seen one Minke - long way off and at sea. Loads of sleepy Humpbacks off Canada last week, nothing as spectacular as this.
