It can still be fun though - the choices of subject matter are endless and I'm restricting nothing (within reason and decency!). Be it jelly babies in a row - flowers, bugs, the tines of a fork - absolutely anything.
Chosen purely because it's a favourite occupation of mine to experiment with the most barking mad DOF - none of the results ever get shown here but it amuses me no end and hopefully it might amuse you.

The shot above is immaterial old thing.... the challenge is all about 'Depth of Field'.

Quote: Just too hard for me!! Catch you all next week!!
oh no gossyboy - I thought it was be fairly straightforward this week
Actually I've never read that article and think it would be a good idea for me to do so. Most of my images are done with little thought to the technicalities - I've just got to know what my various cameras can do and don't think about the numbers.
i know I should read more about my camera and how to do various shots. i have produced quite a few shots with a good DOF but now i have got to do it i'm finding it impossible. not to worry, it will give me something to look up and do this week..................
Good luck all..................
have you tried varying your physical distance from the object in question? How close can you get for instance - with the macro the closer I get the narrower the DOF (often up to a couple or so inches) - if I'm too lazy to change the lens then I have to move way back from the flower in question to get more in focus.
I know this is not the technical answer but I find this approach usually works
Quote: Well, I entered but only after my batteries in camera failed !
Then my daughter wanted to look on the internet and I resized the photo wrongly and had to do it again.
Ah the trials of working against the clock
Trust me however, the judging bit is going to be far more stressful!

All going way over my head i'm affraid. Thanks for trying but you are dealing with a real beginer here.............i mainly use the auto and have done a fair bit with the shutter speeds but the whole apperture thing still has me a bit confused.............
I like mr cals head scan, but what is he doing with lego???
i like the resistor one too, if i was really geeky then id day that the front one was a 4.7k ohm resistor. DOH!!

You are and it is...! 'cept you forgot the gold = 2% tolerance...I think..!!

dam, oh yeah the gold band, not done that for over 10 years, lol
Gossyboy - in all seriousness, it's pretty much all controlled by the aperture. The basic rule-of-thumb that I go by is 'The smaller the number on the aperture reading, the smaller the depth of field' - so that F2.8 always gives less depth than F8, which gives less than F22...

My heads hurting now. All too technical for me. I'm gonna have to go buy a photography for dummies book or something.
Thanks to everyone for their help but it's just not going in!
