Yes, I think I prefer the other one too. The icicles in the other one appear almost menacing, like an ice hand. This one is very tame and the composition doesn't quite work. Perhaps if the shot was taken more from the right, with the large icicle dominationg and in focus aganst the smaller icicles thrown out of focus the composition might be better.

Ian.

good enough, but images like this need a bit of brightness and impact. Backlit would be nice - real or flash off camera.

I prefer the other shot too Benjamin. It has real drama and impact as the icicles are so large and you have really homed in on them. With this shot the effect is not so strong because you have some quite bright snow on the ground which pulls your attention away from the icicles. Also there is quite a lot of blur in the background where it is not clear what is going on. This tends to lessen the impact of the shot.

I have uploaded a mod for you where I have cropped the image to focus on the icicles in the foreground. It has become more like a letterbox on its side. I have also boosted the contrast a bit and applied it just to the icicles as we do not want to make the snow on the ground too bright.

Best wishes

Catherine
