Just traded my camera and some money for a Olympus e510 and hubby got me new lense 70-300 this is one of my shot hand held not brilliant but its so heavy not sure what bird it is

Definitely a Green Woodpecker - we've got some at work and they love to be on the grass the problem is that you then just get the eye, top of its head and beak and boy have I tried to get more than that. I still use my monopod especially if I walk a lot - just keep the camera steady also when I wait for the subject to turn or do something. Ina
you must be chuffed dawn its a good lense but needs good hands which im sure you have
