On June 10th. 1944 the Germans massacred 642 people, almost the entire population, and bombed the village of Oradour-Sur-Glen. It was deceided to keep the village as it was as an iconic symbol for the world to look at and ponder.

The grave yard within the village is heartbreaking as you walk round and read about the men, women and childen who were murdered.

As I walked round the village I was struck by the respect the visitors showed by being very quiet. Even the school children were well behaved and almost silent as ,I'm sure they realised this was not the result of a game or a film but what happens when monsters are let loose.

I spoke to some German visitors afterwards who were as moved as anyone else.

It is about 15 miles West Noth West of Limoges and well worth a visit.

It must have been a moving experience, but extremely sad.
There are some shots of the village in 'The World at War' series - we occasionally watch the DVDs. Tt was all such a terrible waste, and yet still the killing goes on. Says something about the human condition.....

The other side to the horrible things that we can do to each other, there seems no end to the cruelty that man can inflict on man. Thanks for bribing this image on site, I'm sure even more people will find out about it now.
