The African Fish Eagle (haliaeetus vocifer)
The African Fish Eagle or – to distinguish it from the true fish eagles, the African Sea Eagle – is a large species of eagle that is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa wherever large bodies of open water occur that have an abundant food supply.
This Eagle is part (as many of you will know) of the flying display at the Hawk Conservancy Trust at Andover. His name is Othello and he has been at the Trust for a number of years. In this part of the display Othello is being encouraged to practice his skills, albeit on a very small man made lake (puddle!!!) Since he has always been at the Trust his fishing abilities are entirely instinctive although looking at those exposed talons he would make short work of any fish that may have been in the water.
I hasten to add it was only scraps of food he was being tempted with and nothing live.!!!!!Hope you like him.
Grateful thanks of course to all those kind folks that found time to click/comment on the Barn Owl and particular thanks to Steve(sparrowhawk),Richard (mex) and Brian (brian 65) for the much valued UA's.
