Another shot from Ovingham Goose Fair. The title comes from a very silly old song, which some of you may be ancient enough to remember...
Apologies to Mikbee, Tony_Baloni and everyone else of the Scottish persuasion, but here in wild and wooly Northumberland, this is what we call bagpipes.
What you see are Northumbrian Smallpipes, a cousin of the musette, as played at the French Royal Court in the 18th Century.
It's a highly sophisticated instrument, sweet, discreet, melodious.
You don't blow into these - under the lady's right arm you will see bellows, which require a vigorous elbow action.
To add to the educational element and shock the Scots even more, this is also what we call tartan - the Northumberland Tartan, worn by the Duke's Pipers since 1760, but its history goes back a lot further. We have an awful lot of black & white sheep in Northumberland, and this was a logical way of using the wool.
The lady had just finished playing and was suddenly relaxed - which is when I find people most interesting.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Interesting account to go with the 'human interest' shot of the pipes. Pity we can't attach sound to our jpgs. Pete, are you listening...? Wink

Great capture, like the title too, although I don't think I remember the song.

Matt - you're obviously far too young!
John, Robin (and anyone else who doesn't know the smallpipes) - check out Katherine Tickell's CDs, she's quite adventurous, mixing traditional material with jazz.

Wonderful expression of pride and what appears to be "whew...I made it". Thanks also for the description. I was not aware of those facts, very interesting.
