there have been a couple of threads recently about flash , and the pro's and con's of studio flash against portable strobes.... I use both, but love the portablility of a SB 800 or equivalent, controlled in the right way I think it produces some excellent results.....
this one using a nikon SB 800 with umbrella - manual @ 1/8 ....

hi Cole... the flash gun is on a tripod, triggered by the Nikon CLS system and I bought one of these umbrella clamps to tame the light
although kaiser do a better one where the umbrella will move with the flash umbrella slot
Firstly thanks for the feedback on my recent upload.
Interesting portrait, I presume the flash was camera right, was the flash shot through the brolly or reflected. Im guessing reflected. Just because, to me, the light seems fairly soft.
Congratulations on the HC.
Colin
Hi Colin,
the flash was positioned right of the camera, hooked up to an umbrella and aimed at the back drop, not the subject. So you only get the spill on the subject, the light was set @ 1/8 on manual.
This is the tutorial that got the juices following
studio like lighting from a strobe - nicely done.
