This is a first attempt at a portrait, my daughter Rachel and I had a good laugh trying to get a half decent shot and I nearly blinded her with a reflector I was trying to use at the same time.
Thanks to her endless patience we managed to get a photo we both liked.
The sun gave us quite a few problems with the glare as no clouds or shade to use but the reflector really helped, I used the white in the end after trying Gold and Silver, the white seemed to soften the shadows best but not easy to hold this and the camera at the same time!

A delightful portrait of great character; beautiful natural skin tones and the depth of field & background are rather lovely. The fun you two had setting up the shot really shines through, and that's really what it's all about.
The back of Rachel's hair is burned out while the rest of the exposure is pretty well spot-on. A possible solution to this relatively minor niggle would be to under-expose by 1/3 or even 2/3 EV in camera, as files from the D300 will easily recover shadow detail without detriment to the tones. As it is, I don't think that detail in the hair would burn in in Photoshop, so another solution would be to crop the right to about 4:3 format as an alternative composition. They are merely suggestions, as the photo is pleasing as it is.

The golden light on the curve of Rachel's hair beside her neck is a particular delight. The lighting conditions have worked for you as well as against. Very bonny!
P.S.: I've just looked at your portfolio page etc. In my life as a German teacher I took great pleasure in studying All Quiet on the Western Front with my older students; I'm pleased to know that I'm not the only one who likes it.

Cheers Bill, thanks very much for your comments, these are really useful tips, the glare of the sun was really intense, didn't really know how to combat it, in hindsight should have waited for better lighting.
Have read many good books over the years, none have made a bigger impression on me than this book, great to hear it's a favourite of yours too.
