Afternoon All
Well the cold rains and snow flurries have made their way to my little corner spot in Delaware. I was out shooting with the wife on Sunday at Hooper’s Island in Maryland when it all hit at once. Talk about being frustrated, they wife and I found several pairs of Belted Kingfishers but could not focus on them because of the flurries. However we did manage some shots of Plovers and Herons in the snow.
Today I went out and setup my staging area in order to use some of the still snow and overcast to catch some even light in the birds. It was a good day as the Cardinals, Woodpeckers, Junco’s, Wrens and others were all out looking for a handout after the weekend’s cold blast. Well I am off on another business trip, see you all soon, and I will be out on the site to catch up shortly.
Greg
My setup when shooting:
1. Setup a fallen branch, 1 inch holes drilled in the backside of the branch. I filled in the holes with peanut butter, chunky type.
2. Used Christmas tree stand to hold the branch in place. I placed branch in an open area back from the tree line and away from any shade source. There was overcast skies and did not want the trees to hinder the lighting.
3. Setup the two man hide/blind about 15 feet away from the staging branch.
4. Grabbed a thermos of coffee, setup my tripod and mounted the camera.
5. Set the camera to manual mode.
6. Fired off several shots each time, checked the results and then fire off some more.
7. I constantly checked the level meter in the camera for changes in the light strength.

Fantastic shot, and great description about how you went about getting the shot too! Most handy information.
Excellent wildlife photography Greg, pin sharp and terrific detail and colours.
What an amazing looking bird! The pose and stance are very strong and of course the red markings put it over the top. I see you are finally having a little winter. What do the birds do?
