This is a digital manipulation combining two consecutive action frames. I was 22.6m(tripod used) away from the Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) and focusing on the animal crouched on the perch, before it took off, hence the perch being the only thing in sharp focus.

The two squirrel captures are blurred and I have tried to sharpen them a little. I extended the canvas in front of the airborne squirrel to give him space into which to leap.

V2 and V3 are the original two frames, out of the RAW editor and untweaked, for use as mods, as I am sure there are those of you who can make a much better job of the manipulation and would love to learn alternative methods Smile

Clever work in V1, but V3 works best for me. Very impressive, and a classic moment-in-time capture; a leap into space, it reminds me strangely of some diving shots from the London Olympics!

Excellent manipulation in v1
V3 is my favourite though - the gap between the cut off branch and the squirrel speaks volumes SmileSmile

Well done, nicely put together, nope, not the sharpest images but you have made thje best of them.
The darker OOF tree is just about the only distraction/niggle,I would have had a bash at removing it to give a nice clean bg..the dof is lovely btw.
Colours are good, there are a few highlights on the stump so perhaps you could have afforded a very slightly faster shutter speed, not by much though but that may have given you less blur on the Squirrel.
You got yourself in the right place at the right time...good job done !

At first sight, v1 is very impressive and has attracted loads of comment, as it should. You have made your own major criticism, the squirrel itself is a bit soft with the perch sharp. At this size, you get away with it, but large, I suspect it would be more obvious.

I'm not convinced it is a depth issue entirely. Could be a bit of movement too. Movement blur is very difficult to sharpen. You needed a camera position where the branch and direction in which the squirrel was leaping remained in the same plane to remove any depth issues.

Paul

Not a bad manipulation.
I find the white frame with the drop shadow a bit overpowering, particularly as it's presented here, on a black background.

I think the composition works very well - I do like these composite type shots. As you have pointed out above though, the squirrels themselves are a little soft.

Phil.
