Another play today, but using a ND8 filter to help balance the ambient. What are your thought on this as an image?

I rather like it actually. He certainly stands out from the background. Why a ringflash though? Surely it doesn't bring anything special to the party unless you are shooting macro.

Not true at all.
Lot of fashion/portrait photographers use it as it eliminates the shadow and more even flash exposure.
