It's funny how things don't always turn out how you expect them too. I had been photographing this particular buck against a heather backdrop on the side of the hill. I had been photographing him for a while when he eventually decided to make his way up to the brow of the hill. The weather was very cloudy and overcast and the sky had no colour whatsoever, so I thought I'd call it a day rather than waste time photographing him against a featureless sky. I took two shots just for the sake of it really, wandering to myself why I had just been daft enough to waste a couple of shots on a scene that had no interest or appeal whatsoever. But funny enough it was one of those very same two shots (the one posted) that actually turned out to be my favourite from the day ![]()

Agree wholeheartedly with Jon. Apart from the powerful silhouette of the Roebuck, the detail of the low-shrub/grass silhouettes is remarkable, accentuated by the added depth of the blurred conifer tree branches.
