Not a bad effort, but limited by the equipment in use.
The date is horrible and needs to go. You could crop a little to tighten the composition, and up the contrast curve a little to give it more punch, but other than that, there is not much else you can do to improve it: there are better angles to shoot birds from.

Thanks Sooty 1 and Focus Man for your comments, you are both absolutely correct. I have since turned off the date stamp on later photos, and the quality will be limited by the camera I use. All my photos are handheld so far.Focus Man-had a brief look at your portfolio,very professional looking.You probably are.

I quite like this.
I've got dozens of similar shots to this, that I've acquired by throwing bread out into the garden and photographing the results from a window!
As has been said, the date really needs to go and the composition's a wee bit awry.
I've uploaded a mod. in which I've cropped it, tweaked it a bit using the shadows/highlights tool and made an adjustment to the colour balance. As it stands, it''s very green.
All done using CS5.

Edit: Sorry, forgot to say that I also sharpened it a little.
Thanks Sooty 1 and Jester for your mods.Yes Sooty's grass colour is more like the actual,although lighter,and puts the bird centre stage,but I prefer Jester's overall mod.I would have preferred to take the photo this way.I am using a Canon Ex Browser for mods.What is CS5?

If you're looking for some free software to get you started, you might like to look at Picasa or FastStone, both of which are fairly useful and cost nothing.
Alternatively (and this is my favourite amongst the freebies) try Pixlr, which is also free and is web based, meaning that there's no need to download or instal it. You can use it from anywhere that you have access to the internet.
And have a look at this lot!
You should find something amongst that lot!
