Beautiful Mono image.
Pin sharp, perfect exposure with a wide tonal range.
I would be interested in the processing details.

Thanks Bill,
I keep things simple, using lightroom 4 and I work with the histogram always. It doesn't seem to let me down. I suspect a full frame sensor also helps with tonal range.
I am looking forward to this group, I hope people will be more forthcoming with good constructive criticisms.

Regards
Dave

Hi Dave,

I'm going to have to disagree with Bill and possibly yourself, I'm afraid.

Checking the histogram (levels or curves) using CS6, it doesn't reach the LHS and struggles from about two thirds of the way to the right.
Using 'curves' to apply a black and a white point threshold really brings it to life.
Sorry if that all sounds a bit negative.

Bren.

Hi Bren

For me as viewed on my monitor there is detail in both shadows and highlights and to my eyes the tonal range looks good.
But the beauty of different viewpoints brings a different way of seeing.

Perhaps Dave would like to enable modifications so that your interpretation can be appreciated via a modification?

All good healthy input Smile Smile

Absolutely!

As you say, there's detail in the shadows and highlights but there isn't a true black or white point anywhere. It just looks a little flat.
The modded version that I have is perhaps just a little extreme and if it was my image, I'd probably rein it in slightly but I do think a touch more contrast is needed.

Bren.

Hi Bren,

When I use the Histogram, I also use the clipping, there are very small areas where the black clipping shows. I am using lightroom 4 and I can only go by what I see on the screen of my iMac.

This is my first night on this forum. I wasn't expecting such detailed critisms. Quite challenging.

How do I make it available for modification, I am pleased to see where it can be improved.

Hi Dave
Go to edit, options and there will be a tick box for modification.
Hope this makes sense.

Have done that now Bill. Looking at the recent posts, is the idea that we submit just one image per week? Also are there any rules etc for the group.

It`s early days for the group at the moment Dave so any input is welcomed.
The rules (very few) are posted on the home page of the group.
The one upload per week is currently under discussion and not yet decided.

Taking on board Bren`s observations I have uploaded a mod which lifts the image a bit.
I think I still like the "delicacy" of the original though.

That's pretty much what I've got; the one I'd probably rein in a bit!

This is a discussion that could go on forever. Neither version is, strictly speaking, 'better' than the other. They're just people's opinions.
One idea though and it's always a good test of how well you have the contrast adjusted, particularly in mono, is to produce a print.

Good luck!

Bren.

Sorry Dave, I hadn't uploaded it!

It's not quite as dark as Bill's, or indeed as I'd thought it was. You might want to download it and look at it beside a copy of your version to make a proper comparison.
