Wrong. ![]()
Andy...
Although I'm not in the buddy group cannot let this pass without a comment.
The concept of using the hat to give a sense of anonymity, we do not know it is really you
together with the arrangement of the lighting picking out certain features, such as the stitching is excellent.
The B&W conversion is particularly good with you having managed to convey the complete range of tones, something that lets a lot of B&W images down when viewing on a monitor.
In fact, for me, the quality is what I would expect to normally see on a darkroom print.
The only small observation I would make is that the lighting on your shoulders is not balanced, the right one being just a little stronger than the left
You may have had trouble deciding on an idea, but this one is certainly worthy of an upload,

Andy...
and I second this statement, different if not unusual
Great idea very well executed (wouldn't have expected anything less
). (I am guessing this didnt help you - the expectation that yours would be good I mean). The lighting is very effective and although I agree that it might be better if the back light was balanced left and right of the shoulder I don't think it is critical. What is really well lit is the braiding and crown of the hat; it really shows off the texture.
Why am I not surprised Cheryl ![]()
I was going to object because surely a portrait should convey something about the person and let you get to know them a little better. But on reflection this is you and hiding from the camera is exactly what I'd expect you to do, so in hiding you've revealed yourself!
And excellent job with the lighting combining the clarity of the face, silhouette and backlighting too.
Not sure if it would work or not, but I'd be curious to see a version with selectivly colouring that familiar hat?

I think the lighting is too much on your face, it is just a bit too wash out for me. I would like to see more play of highlight and shadow on the face as well, just like the hat.
But that might show up the wrinkles..................not that there are any I'm sure ![]()
Cheryl I tend to be in agreement with Cole, the flash doesn't seem to be quite balanced, the face (RHS as you look) tends to be a bit bleached, and the rim lighting on the LHS (shoulders is a bit too strong), I would have prefered it a bit more like it is on the RH side.
I like the concept the sense of mystery, and you dont have to get the eyes in sharp focus ![]()
The mono treatment is pretty effective - It may be worth looking at the channel blend to try to get more detail, a touch more of the blue or green channel should reveal a bit more detail (no not as much as in mine!!).
Oh and congrats on the diet
Thanks all.
I agree the light is a bit harsh, I tried many variations in positioning the flashgun, but basically I think my conversion left a little to be desired. The idea of increasing the blue or green channel is probably correct, but since I stopped using a plug-in for this I find it hard to visualise the best settings with just the channel mixer (which is what I used). I found the image looked a little flat when I upped the green or blue from this setting, but maybe adding a gradient map after the conversion has increased contrast too much as well.
Yes Pete the rowing machine is working well. You never know at this rate I may be able to attend Focus and not be recognised by anyone that has not seen me for a while
Harder to keep losing now I am living in hotels again, but at least staying constant for now. Will need to try to push on to lose last 20lb.
Jumping right in:
Bright spot near the right rear of the brim that could go.
There's a bit of light wrap on the hat, directly where your left eye would be. I still can't decide how I feel about it. On the one hand, it draws away from your face. On the other hand, it's shaped almost like a cat's eye, and for that reason, I quite like it. It also breaks up what would be a large expanse of even toning, which would weigh the hat down too much, I think.
Most of the other stuff's been covered. The lighting on the face actually looks okay on my screen, and I like the rimlit shoulders. Extra points for doing something different.
I guess at the next Focus we'll get an idea of how succesful Zorro's 'disguise' really was... ![]()
