Are you new to the site Belinda? I wasn't sure because your join date says 1 Jan last year but this may be a mistake and you only have one shot in your portfolio. Anyway, a big welcome to the Critique Gallery.

I am not sure I would be able to get in the right position for a self portrait so you have done very well to keep it all together and look very calm and unflustered. It is an unusual angle and you do hold the attention of the viewer with those large eyes even though your face is very much over to one side of the frame.

What did you do about the lighting? Why I ask is that there is quite a strong light hitting your torso area which competes for attention with your face, particularly as this area sits in the middle of the pic. I have uploaded a mod for you where I have toned down this area so it fits in with the rest of the pic. Perhaps you need some kind of diffuser on the light source to make it less harsh. It is difficult to offer more advice without knowing what lighting you used.

Good luck with the photography through the rest of the year, Belinda

Catherine

Cracking portrait for your 'opening-shot'.....I like the unusual, but successful pose, different, yet nice & relaxed....top notch piece of work !

Great self portrait, the different angle works very well, watch the knees just popping out of frame, still love it.

hello, yes i am new! I joined last year as I wanted to view someone's photos on this site but have now come back for a closer look..and i intend to stay this time!!! Thanks for all your comments - Cath, I only have some basic kit and this shot was taking with natural lighting only. Our living room has a sky light just above the sofa hence the lighting to torso area. I will check out your mod in a moment. Thanks again for comments everyone.

I feel that a little more preparation beforehand would of enhanced the shot considerably, apart from the aforementioned highlight on the torso area, the focusing should have been looked at too! the seam of the sofa seems to be in focus and then it gets softer the further back one looks, so a manual focus set to the area of the upper head so your eyes would have been in absolute focus and sharp, and a meter reading of the lightest area.

a fine effort, but a couple of problems. The lighting is rather strong on your body - needs reducing, and the focus on your eyes is a bit off. 99% of the time, focal point should be the eyes - possibly a function of self portrait and auto camera focusing.

i would also letterbox it - a bit off top and bottom.
