I was quite surprised when I found these flies (Robber Flies?) mating and realised that the female was eating another fly. Never come across this before! She certainly didn't want to drop her meal for any man! ![]()
I know they're not the greatest of photos, I've had to crop and lighten them up a bit, but I thought they were interesting so decided to share anyway. V2 shows the prey more clearly. Thanks for looking ![]()

These are quite similar to Robber flies but are called Dance flies, these are possibly Empis tesselata.
The males either catch another fly or if they're feeling really lazy, steal one from a spiders web and present it as a gift (read : BRIBE) to the female to keep her busy while he has his wicked way.
Sex through bribery works wonders for soooo many species ![]()
