A 3 way formation showing the side body grip. Each skydiver takes hold of a grip on the opposing skydivers leg and arm.this is held for app. 1sec before breaking the grip and moving on to the next one.

A top team can preforme app.25+ different grips in 35 seconds which is the working time during National and International competitions these are preformed around the world by 4 way and 8 way teams. The grip is not counted until everyone has completed the grip and this will be recorded by the cameraman on video and played back by the judges on the ground. The cameraman is a very importaint part of the team for obvious reasons, if he misses one of the grips that can be the difference in a medal position and he/she soon becomes redundant and ends up doing landscape photography from the ground lol.

Thanks for lookimg.

Mike

Mike , I can only imagine the difficulty in getting a shot, never mind one as good as this.

Could you let us know how it's done as in how is the camera attached, do you hold it until landing etc.

Well done again.

T.

Superb capture Mike, stunning detail & colour particularly when viewed large.Very good work.
Janet

Thanks for the comments and the question Tommie.
The Canon 10D is mounted on the top surface of my helmet via a locking plate and is activated with a special cable and switch in my left hand. The connection via the cable and helmet is via a jack plug so if I get into a malfunction situation I can cut away me helmet and cameras before I deploy me reserve parachute. This is to stop a bad situation becoming worse.( i know this from experience being in this situation on Good Friday 2003)
The video camera is attached to a side mounted on the left of the helmet and operated in a similar way.I keep the formation in frame using a ring sight mounted on helmet over my left eye.
The rest is down to flying your body using your hands, arms and legs gravity will take care of the rest.
You will see my previous set up on me portfolio photo this one I had to cut away as described.

How did I guess this was yours Mike?? I wonder. Nice colourful shot, it amazes me that you can get such a sharp image when you are dropping through the sky at 120mph (or whatever it is). Love it

You must have a neck like mike tyson! That amount of wieght and going at those sort of speeds must put a tremendous strain on it.

Great shot.

Mike i never new how much goes into the competition! it's amazing how clear you capture these shots because of the rate of speed! every movement they complete must be timed perfectly!
Out of this world capture, I'll stick with the dangerous flower captures myself!

stay well!
