There are two meanings for the adjective 'spectral', both seem particularly apt for this image.
1. Of or like a ghost - If I'd known this place was so haunted I would not have been staying behind for the sunset and having to walk through the churchyard afterwards!!
2. Of or concerning the spectrum - The rainbow effect around the sun is caused by the light refracting through the water vapour and ice crystals of the high altitude clouds.
The rainbow effect is natural, albeit accentuated by two ND grads. The grads have removed the detail from the towers but adds to the spookiness.
The image is taken, again on the North Kent Coast at Reculver Towers, a while later than my previous upload.
Iso200, 1/320s, f16, 18mm, tripod, remote release. (nb.. should have used ISO100!!)
Many thanks for all your comments on Two Towers, very appreciated, and to Ade and Darryl for their UAs.
Great image, well composed and captured................
A most eye-catching composition making the most of the late evening light.
Great and nicely image,well done,
Beautiful silhouette, lovely light across the water and lighting up the seaweed in the fg. Most of all GHOSTIES - love the thought of them . Beautiful shot Dave. Moira
Superb image, Dave. Nice pov and comp. Deep
I have seen many images of Reculver in my time, additionally I have taken many. However without fear of persecution or prejudice, I believe this to be one of the finest. A superbly balanced low light composition, beautifully exposed, and one which generates a great feeling of calm. "As for the ghosts. "bah humbug'".....
An excellent capture.
Beautiful ............... Love all the colours, not just in the sky but on the sea and in the foreground too...... Lovely
Interesting stuff about the spectrum
Superb shot, the image justifies the title!
Beautifully rich in colour and texture.
Well thought out and executed, Dave.
Superb shot, great composition and light, beautifully captured.
I remember that effect Dave. Very rare I would think. Excellent image which really evokes the atmosphere.
All I can say is SUPERB, Dave.
This is an excellent capture which I think revels in detail and light.
I think there are great shots to be had by shooting into the light.
Well done. WesternRed.
Excellent capture, love the way the lens has transformed this.
Coo, the sea certainly brings in the rotten seaweed…
Great even a little spooky, has that atmosphere one tries hard to achieve but often fail, so I think you have done a grand job of this like it lots, no problems in the church yard hopefully lol. regards Leon.
The thumbnail had your signature all over it Dave - and what a magnificent image it is, one for the wall, for cards, postcard, china even ... Carol
Beautiful scene Dave.
Wonderul use of light - one for the Verbatim Light competiion?
Lovely curves in the composition.
The towers look good from this angle.
Superb light and foreground, excellentlly taken.. great work, Dave.
Just one thing, do I see a kind of blue line on the top of the towers and the surrounding area? Is it the filter's effect?
An absolutely cracking shot. SUPERB.
It has produced some wonderful colours Dave. I've seen a similar phenomenon when walking in mountains which may be slightly different. In any event, a great composition enhanced by this light.
Absolutely spectacular. Superb composition, details, like the silhouetted towers, and the lighting is out of this world. Beautiful work. Well done!
superb work worth risking a ghost or two
.......so now I know
Lovely colours in the sky and water
Simply stunning, Dave! A real beautiful capture, gorgeous light
This is a cracker Dave, I love the effect you have managed to capture here. I love the dark towers too... you can almost sense the coming night! Excellent.
A glorious image, Dave, very well spotted, composed and captured. Carol
Not just luck. This has been photographed with great skill and knowledge of equipment.
Spot on a classic image well done
Awesome capture Dave, that is the problem with using ND Grads is it darkens other parts of the image, have you tried the Adjustment Brush in Camera Raw, using this you can lighten or darken any part of the photo, with my Tiger upload today the light was very tricky and the eye's were so dark you could not see them, using the Adjustment Brush it has brought back detail to the eyes, would work on the church.
Leaves me speechless. I like the way the towers are a silhouette - seems to add an air of mystery.
Luv it, Dave, my favourite type of image, absolutely superb, brilliant use of light and texture to create that wonderful lead in foreground interest. Once again thanks for all the information, most enlightening and helpful.
Stunning capture .Great light ....Phil
Dave stunning shot
a really beautifully and well thought out image
Super clarity and light, Dave.
Outstanding and imaginative work again Dave. Very nice.
Another stunning shot Dave its got the lot
excellent light on fg Dave
Beautifully captured Dave, the grad filters working well to keep the mid day sun under control, another beautifully composed and executed image, very well done, Bill.
a great sunny seascape, lovely light on the f/g and superb tones in the sky.
now i'll have to dig out a bridge picture!
Wish I could get in sooner with a comment.
Great shot, everybody else has said it.
Must try harder.
Like it a lot.
Beautiful, serene and calm....love it
Every thing has been say about the image, apart from "Superlativa"
Quote: Double WOW!!!!!
WOW WOW, I say too!!!!!!! Ania
clever image, much more to it than meets (or doesn;t meet) the eye.
This is rather special, Dave, and I love the idea of it being haunted.
I found this in the Cloud Appreciation Society under iridescence, and this explanation.
Superb image Dave.
Love that light.
Brilliant and beautiful image. Well captured. Elaine
Excellent shot, Dave.
'Superlative Image & Composition' ~ Peter
another in a growing PF of good images
A cracking image Dave. Well captured
A late vote Dave but worth every comment above .Love it
wonderful light... a golden light that is very hard to record. I wonder why would have preferred 100 ISO?
looks fine to me... But I never even bother with dragging a tripod, only use it at home now.
Great as an atmospheric shot of the weather conditions and I can see why you had to over-grad! I wonder if HDR bracketing would have got you around that problem? Although I also thing silhouetting the ruins works well for spooky factor, but HDR might have brought out more from the middle ground.
Being picky with my retrospectoscope I'd have been tempted to maybe use the groyne for FG interest rather than the seaweed which is a bit grotty and less interesting even if it adds a second lead in line to the sun reflection (or maybe you should start carrying boulders and rocks around with you like I do ).
Never heed my ramblings though, as you can see by votes and accolades the image has been well recieved!
Excellent capture, Dave.
Wonderful light and composition.
Waaaw I really like this one
An excellent composition Dave, the portrait format works so well
A beautiful composition
Great title for this lovely image.
I love everything about this picture.
Dave, sorry so short of time this week, but a great composition with all the right mix.
