So, there we were, Mrs. Salty and I, enjoying a leisurely stroll over to Île Saint Louis in Paris, when we were presented with a scene of utter confusion, hideous aromas and high-pitched screams.
We had stumbled across the annual ritual whereby the second-year students of the Faculté de Médecine Pierre et Marie Curie, (Campus de la Pitié Salpêtrière), l'Université Paris et Marie Curie, 'welcome' the new first-year intake into the ranks of medical education.
It was utterly impossible to see who was on which 'team' as utter confusion appeared to reign supreme.
Among the culinary ingredients we managed to recognise were, 2kg bags of flour, raw eggs, cans of whole plum tomatoes (thrown at the enemy, but retaining the opened can in hand, fortunately for the recipient of the fruit), litre upon litre of mayonaisse in squezy bottles, ketchup and some vile-smelling brown liquid in plastic bottles which, despite the best efforts of one student to explain to me what the ingredients were, I was not able to understand, and declined the offer of tasting despite his reassurances to my health should I partake of a wee dram.
The whole thing was a masterpiece of strategy and tactics, my new-found French doctor-to-be informed us, and said that the battle lasted several hours and that afterwards they retired to the sanctuary of the campus bar to heatedly debate the events of the day and argue over who had actually won.
Please forgive the technical quality of the images, as it was all happening at breakneck speed, and I was spending more time watching for incoming culinary missiles than concentrating on taking award-winning images. I was in the middle of their battle and it was up to myself to dodge the 'bullets'
Great fun, and a marvellous experience to share on this Silly Sunday
