Three variations of this shot.
I would like to know what you think of this shot and which is the better of the three.
The shot is of a sluice gate control in the Stable Pond at Powis Castle. I wanted to get the reflections of the control, reeds etc. I changed shutter and apeture settings on each one.
All three shots are straight from the camera without any manipulation (other than resize).
All criticisms and comments welcomed.
ISO 400
Shutter 1/280
Apeture f4.0

I think you've got a more pleasing comp on shot 1 - the others have the wood a little clost to the top fo the frame for confort.
Maybe take a little off the left so the wood thing's not quite so central in the shot too.
The textire of the green polants at the back could be enhanced with a little more contrast, but I really do like the light coming through them - makes them jump out at you somewhat.
finally, I wasn't there so this may have been impossible, but a few steps to the righ or further back along the bank and you may have got a more isolated reflection of the wood - here it's nearly there, but the bank itself kinda intersects it, and also those flowers catch it too

The winner for composition is V1 for me. I agree about a little crop to the left, but don't lose those foreground yellow flowers.
It occurs to me that there is a nice large tree just behind the sluice gate which is also reflected in the water. And is that a house also reflected on the right side? I might have gone for portrait format to include one or both of these features. In particular, the tree and gate might suffice.

Useful comments for you so far. Its v1 for me and as has been suggested maybe change the angle slightly to move the sluice to the left but more importantly in my opinion, to allow more of the yellow flower + reflection (Top right side) to be seen in the image.
This then provides a diagonal balance to the yellow flowers bottom left.
I think I may also have been tempted to crop a little off top and left side - primarily to lose that little bit of trunk (as an alternative to Pamelajean's suggestion)

I must thank you all for your comments and I will take these on board and strive to implement them if I get another chance at this shot. The location is some 1 1/2 hour drive away. The shots were taken all within minutes of each other and just after midday on a very sunny day. The second reflection is also another tree, the whole of that side of the pond is wooded and to the left of the foreground greenery is a path. I could have moved a little more to the right but then I thought the angle of the corner would not have been so pleasing.
Everybody to their own opinion, what pleases one does not please another. I have learnt a lot from this small experiment and from all of your comments.
Thank you
Stuart
Peter, thanks for the MOD and your comments. Unfortunately it is unlikely that I will be taking this shot again unless I make a special trip (90 minute drive on the best of days). I will be trying to bear in mind all the comments and suggestions made when taking similar shots.
