This probably won't be to everyones taste, but I liked the gritty urban feel that B&W gives to this image. I pushed the processing a somewhat to make it a bit more graphic. Any comments, critique or mods are most appreciated.

Wasnt sure if a tighter crop would work to go with your title
love this in mono
The gritty urban feel is definately there and really Iike the light you have captured. I think you can afford to lighten is just a fraction, and I think this will 'invite' people into the photo just a bit more.
I think it's a great spot - we must all walk past scenes like this all the time, but you've done well to see the image.
What the image is missing I feel, is a touch of drama. If it's near where you live, could you try to go back and repeat the exercise but lying on your belly on the ground with a slightly wider angle? I'm not sure if this is a particularly savoury idea because I don't know the place 
but what it would do is give you a more dramatic perspective I think. You could then include the top of the steps without losing the dark underpass and the grafitti...
Being able to see a little more of the dark underpass and then being able to see the top of the steps would really make them seem like an escape route - a true stairway to heaven 
Altogether though, this is a great idea and I like it.

cool looking shot you've done here
main thing I'd suggest is that you've tilted down a bit too much - if you'd tilted the camera up a little bit, you'd get less pavement in the foreground (which is less interesting than the rest of the shot) and also got the top of the stairs in
I think that would have been a huge benefit.
try it again - maybe get the bottom of the stairs pretty close to the bottom of the shot, not touching, and make sure you get some sky in there and the top of the railings

First thank you so much for such complete and constructive feedback - and for the mod Barbara. It is really helpful and you have all raised some excellent points and provided great suggestions. As the location is easy for me to get back to I think I will try it again and experiment a bit with the pov, framing and try a wider lens as well.

could ramble on a bit here because i love the shapes and particularly the super light in this one, but Ade just said everything i would like to so its all said.
the top of the railings would have put more emphasis on the diagonal structure of composition and added another dimension to a super image/
it would then have taken you down the stairs and straight out bottom left along the towpath = great
i like the full range of tones in the mono too
