"Miner" memorial that has been built on the site of the old Six Bells Colliery at Abertillery in South Wales. It is to commemorate the disaster that occurred in the colliery 50 years ago on June 28th 1960, when a gas explosion ripped through the colliery killing 45 of the 48 men working. Designed by artist Sebastien Boyesen it stands 20 meters tall, the statue being 12.6m in height, and the plinth 7.4m. It has already been dubbed "The Angel Of The South" Went along and the sun was directly behind me, hence no face on shots....will have to go back.
My Dad was working at the mine at the time but not on this shift.

for me not keen on the central comp and feel its needs more contrast. The houses and people dont add to it for me, but they do show scale. like your tighter crop and different angle on the 1st mod youve posted. be good to get a face view. have done a mod as i didnt want to feel left out Smile lesley

A grand memorial for such a disaster - and the owners of the mine got away with it having to pay a nominal fine! Things were so different then!

Hi folks,

Thanks for the comments.

This wasn't really about the critique (but thanks Lesley) it was more factual stuff I wanted to show...and if anyone is in the South Wales area they might like to pop along and get a shot . I used the mod thing because I ain't got an E2 membership and it was a way to show a few "average" shots...mostly for scale and interest.

I have a a shot in mind but need to wait for the right conditions. The only problem with the venue is it is a steep sided narrow valley which does not get a sunris / sunset and options are limited.

I would love to know a little more about the time of the disaster but my father passed away 6 years after the accident when I was 8. My mum has dementia but recalls dad was nights at the time.

Hi Al,

I spoke to a local recently about the statue and there are plans to illuminate this from the inside. Now that will look good against a blue / orange sky when it eventually happens. I see in the paper today though that there are plans to excavate the old tip near here as they reckon there is loads of coal in the tip, and that modern technology will release more coal. Let's hope not as the area is looking good now after all the landscaping.

Hi dave,

Funny enough I bumped into a guy from Caerleon Uni up there and we got chatting about things...he called there on his way from a meeting he had to attend...about extra paths for walks planned in that particular area so unless he was fibbing (and he had no reason to?) lets hope the mining bit takes a run n jump. The one thing I have seen though is up on Carne Y cefn there is an area fenced off that has slippage but also nearby some area that has been earmarked for open casting...I sincerely hope that aint right too. Sad The seam from Sixbells through to the old Cwn Collery is right underneath Carn Y Cefn

Hi Al, was only speaking with a friend of ours a few days ago about this, he used to work as a lighting engineer for BBC, and he was asked to photograph it as it was going up. I'm sure he said something about them doing a DVD or something about it.

Will try to find out more about it and get back to you.

Chris
