The Roman emperor Constantine, the first Christian Emperor of the Roman Empire and divider of the world into West (governed by Rome) and East (governed by Constantinople, a city bearing his name) called Istanbul now. He is a hard subject to shoot, the statue itself is big. I may had attempted to take the picture from the other side of the sculpture and from a lower angle so background is the sky... If I remember well from your side there would be trees, am I right? A wide aperture would bur the background if necessary.
A difficult choice to make. Do you want the statue with the distractions or would it be better to make the image wider to include the statue and the building? That would be the million dollar question. In this instance i would clone out the half sign on the right hand side.
Hi Robert, thanks for your comment on my p/f. Tried to PM you but it wouldn't let me.
As said above I think you've fallen between two stools - not wide enough to include more of the Minster or close enough to exclude distractions. I've put up a mod going with the latter. The plinth is at an an awkward angle and the corner hits the bottom frame. The left side has distortion in the vertical and a bit of red and white notice. Similarly on the right there is half a black sign on the ground. I've cropped the lot and gone in close on the statue itself.

A good subject, Robert, and I personally quite like the cathedral in the background. The statue still stands out nicely because of its colour. I have to admit to hardly ever including the plinth in my statue pictures, they rarely do anything to enhance a statue picture. What I do is take a separate shot of the information on the base and then there is no danger of forgetting who or what it is. The statue is the subject, and I therefore like Dave's modification very much.
As your image stands, my eye falls immediately upon the statue and I then want to see more space above his head. I feel that a vertical format would have worked well if you really wanted to include the plinth. If you only have this one and no chance of getting another, a crop to the right would work well, offsetting the statue in the frame and leaving space in the area into which he is looking. You have him very central in the frame.
