taken when the sun had not been up long, i have cropped and lightened it, was trying to get the snow lighter

You can get the snow brighter, but its in shade, so it wont be white. In the mod Ive used a +1 exposure on the snow only. I used Adobe raw to do this, saved a a new file name, then overlaid it on the original, and used a layer mask to reveal the original upper area, which is well exposed.

Decent image but lacks a main subject. I would try and learn by experiment. You will get bogged down with books and you mainly need to learn about the histogram, contrast management, sharpness, dodging and burning. You then have all the main darkroom skills. Once you have those mastered, then experiment more, knowing what a good result looks like.

Theres a load of books Pete, some very technical and pricey, but you will find a lot of tutorials on Youtube for free.
