We started playing with a blue filter to see what mood/feel we could get. To me this feels mysterious. Critique please.

Could possibly do with a touch of light reflected into the left side, though that's probably more down to personal taste.
The blue light doesn't seem to be falling/illuminating equally all round the models head, which for me is a touch off putting.
Nice effect though and worth persevering with.

The lighting on the face is too harsh, picks out every blemish and makes the skin tone pitted and rock like. Could be PSed of course.
The bit of tongue showing, does it no favours, nor the slight narrowing of the eyes.
I love the blue backlight. Needs a bit more light on the face, probably not such a direct gaze.
Although it comes across as trashing, it's meant to be helpful ......sorryWink

I like the blue, perhaps instead of direct on the shot could have been taken from the side slightly but hardly as much as a full profile and portraits should be slightly soft Smile

Thanks chaps, all taken as constructive, so no need to be sorry ColWal.

Something to work on, but I'll get better in time.

You have created a very powerful portrait of the lady and that is a big achievement.

I feel personally that the bare chest area with its shape echoing the face is a weakness, as is the necklace, because they distract attention from the intriguing face.

I also think, as BigCol hinted, that a continuous blue contour round the back of the head would make it appear she was coming out of the blue.

I am no portrait expert - these are simply points about composition, which is a personal thing anyway.

Your approach will get you there in the end; thinking, doing and getting feedback.
