"The Black Cat."

No, not a pub but a neighbour's cat.

There was a fieldfare in my garden this morning and a magpie also paid a rare visit.
I spent seemingly ages at an open window in the vain hope that one or the other might return but as usual, to no avail.
Instead, this bloke turned up which meant, obviously, that the birds weren't going to.
So I photographed him instead.

I shot this in RAW. W/B and converted to tiff. using Lightroom, then tweaked in CS5. Really just curves to adjust the contrast and some sharpening.
I used "spot focus" and placed the target squarely on his eyes and it seems to have worked.

The eyes look very odd to me Bren, - as if they are oversharpened. I loaded a mod, - take a look and let me know what you think.

Otherwise a good black on white. I found a small amount of a green bias in the black on the cats back thats also sorted out, - you can see it in the fur when you zoom in.

Thanks Wilie.
The eyes are oversharpened.
I used this image as a part of my "Photo 366" blog today and when I uploaded it there, the whole thing had become very soft, so I re-sharpened it and tried again.
Sadly, I tried a bit too hard and because this upload is viewed larger, it looks worse.

Hi Brendan,
I have done a quick mod on "The Black Cat", see what you think. I think a black cat on a white background works well but I also think it works better if the cat has a little space to go into which is also as the saying goes is "Pure as the driven snow".

Well done. A strong image and those eyes, over sharpened or not, grab the attention. We feed birds and cats are not welcome - we have had trouble with several neighbours cats but they don't like water and soon learn to keep away. I refuse to supply cats with live food for their entertainment.

Today, in the snow which means lots of ravenous birds, we've had Robin, Chaffinch, Sparrow, Blackbird, Thrush, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Starling, Goldfinch, Great Tit, Wren, Dunnock, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Crow, Magpie and Squirrel. I'm busy shooting HD video clips of them with the 7D and 50/500 Sigma for one of the libraries who have taken every one so far.

Paul
