This is from an old shoot as I want to get crit on this. On the last upload from this shot, I had a fair bit of praise, but some very reasoned criticism as well and I was wondering if I uploaded the wrong image. There are a lot from this shoot, so I am trying to be selective. I hope this image answers some of the criticism. Happy to take any crit on this. Thanks

now this works
i love the way shes off set it works so well with the light on the background.
Wow, thank you Bread! Clearly I picked the wrong image first time round as no bad crit so far! And coming from you, a proper compliment and I thank you ![]()
Quote: Love the lighting as Barry said it works very well, but if it were mind i would have it just a little darker, but thats me all over?
Regards
Tony
Normally, I would agree and did actually try getting a bit darker, but lost a lot of the detail and she didn't like the look when I showed her. So, this bright it was....client is always right...or so I am told...lol!
Cheers though! Thanks for the comment! Appreciated!
Yeah, now I look at it, the small things have made a big difference in peoples perception of it. I am warming to this one more too. Thanks for the comment Kim! ![]()
Quote: Excellent shot. Striking model and good lighting. But I liked the earlier version as well.
Ah thanks! ![]()
Thanks Henry! I have just posted a fairly long reply on my other image regarding Pepsi and portraits. Sorry for rambling, but take on board your very kind words regarding these shots. Thanks ![]()
I am a big fan of casting shadows, and this is shot perfectly, it takes great skill to keep both model and shadow sharp and exposed properly.
Cheers Dani! I find that studio stuff helps to be honest, but I am learning all the way with lighting, so glad you like this. The shadows are a bit over powering to some to be honest, but I like the depth....
Great shot. Nice positioning of the model to camera left. Detailing on the hood makes this photo much more interesting.
Keep an eye on the hands. It will come second nature to you with time.
Thanks Studio....yeah, I can see the criticisms with this shot and they are valid, but I actually quite liked the effect of some of the things others didn't like so much. But agree with the hands...also, was stuck with 4 other togs, 3 models, 1 hour or less to shoot! lol! Not easy to set everything perfectly....
But thanks! Much appreciated with the comments and crit though!
I'm a great fan of hard lighting and this is as close as it can get with flash. If you ever get the chance try this using an Arri Fresnel Light (this would reduce shadows penumbra and increase contrast even more). Nice contrast and saturation. Good pose from model. Strong Portrait. Well Executed
Thanks Roy, good advice. Never heard of the light you were talking about to will certainly look this up. The darkness and lack of separation are a couple of things that annoyed me about this, so will look into it. Thanks!
Thanks Jim! I am coming round to the concept of hard light...I like it. Cheers! ![]()
Thanks Rob, it does have a striking resembelence doesn't it? Although I guess that its what having good studio set ups can do for you I guess...lol! Mind you, yours is done with a touch more craft and class than mine...this was a very early attempt with a not so good camera and about 5 mins to shoot this in, so I guess I cant complain! ![]()
No criticism needed and if I'd shot this I'd be a happy bunny although in my case she'd be without the hoodie. Snoots can be a piggie to get right but for me you've focussed and positioned it just right. Hard light is a challenge but when you get it right as here it's a delight.
Thanks Roger, the hoodie was insisted for her PF...I would have done it without myself personally, but had to do as the client wanted.... lol! Appreciate the comment, thank you ![]()
Thanks Mac, appreciate the comment, glad you like and not a problem on your images! I like! ![]()
Blimey! lol! Thank you! Thats very flattering and glad you like it! Cheers! ![]()
Very nice use of hard light, really like it and i've just had look on your portfolio and all what i can tell is that you have cool way to light, keep working!I'm going to visit you very often.
Daniel
Thank you Daniel! Wow, thats a compliment! Much appreciated! Its usually the thing I get criticised about, so glad someone likes it! ![]()
Hey Johnny, hope this editing I have done on your upload will help you somehow... I am not pro though, it is very basic... So excuse me if I ruined your image
Astyag
Hey Astyag
I can't watch YouTube clips at work properly, due to the system we use here, so will have a look at this at home. But interesting to know what you have done and see how it looks! Cheers!
Hi Astyag
Well, thats weird! Seeing one of my images on YouTube!!! lol!
Well, its the weekend, so had a look at the link and its interesting stuff. So thank you for that. Now, I am not entirely sure I like the final effect....if you don't mind me saying, it makes her look a little "alien-like" and its not for me. BUT....it HAS given me a new skill which I will try on other images for different things to touch up in future images, so for that its very, very useful. Thanks for that. Really appreciate it! Definitely very interesting and thanks so much for taking the time to attempt this and let me know.
And no, I know I shouldn't be opening up EPZ in work hours, but I just can't help myself! lol! ![]()
Good, to be honest, even I thought it will make her look "alien-like" because couple of other stuffs had to be done, like the enlargement of Iris. It works best on portraits from front. not one sided. At least I am happy that you didn't know about this before. Then it would have made it too boring to you. Just for the record, I learned it from Lynda.com videos. If you are into the portraits, this package that I downloaded is mainly for portrait modifying.
Regards mate
Enjoy
Astyag
Have heard a lot of good things about Lynda.com. Must look into it a bit more. Cheers for the info and a very good insight so thanks a lot for that ![]()
The conventionalists will find a few textbook flaws...me I like it just the way you have done it!
lol! Thanks a lot...yep, always someone who picks on the technicalities, yet for me, its all about the picture....glad you like it ![]()
good shot John, infact GREAT shot! superb lighting, beautiful model, GREAT stuff.
Tone
Thanks Tony! Studio work, I love it. And dancers make great models....glad you like it!
Lots been said already, must say I love the hard lighting and goes well with the Hoody, very fine job done.
Dave
Hi John and thanks for vote. I like this image and agree with most of the comments above including your own. I agree the lack of separation with deep shadow on camera is an issue for some. For me it spoils the image, but that could be how EPZ renders images. Nevertheless your high contrast is attention grabbing.
Thank you guys. Your comment, as always, very much appreciated ![]()
lol! Yeah, I know, but was uploaded before I became a member blah blah blah....you know all that.....lol! ![]()
I really like the contrast here - a strong pose and lovely model. Nice one.
Bruce
I have to say not sure what there is to criticise on it, i think the pose is strong, love the light love the colour, and definitely think that less is more, let the viewers mind make up what it wants about the image. It's one to be proud of.
i am back and badder than ever
truly excellent work this mate, you should be rightly proud
Heh heh.....
Cheers fella and nice to have you back! Don't be too bad.... ![]()
I love this one: the spot on the wall, the dark blues, the model's well-lit for me. Good work!
Cheers Richard! Appreciate that! And yeah, she has a certain something! ![]()
