Whilst wandering around Mugdock Castle, I saw this girl with red hair
and asked her if she'd mind me taking her photo - she included the dog
(a Bichon Frise ?) thank you Caziwinkles - he was called Roka.
Alas I didn't realise how difficult it would be to expose for the red hair and white dog
on a sunny day in Scotland. Any advice for the future would be welcome!!!
Thanks you all for vs & cs and continued good wishes for Clare and the baby.

A difficult situation, but at least the white dog gives some light on the girls face.....Peter

You go to photograph a spot but the unexpected and unplanned sometimes works out the best: the lighting here is very contrasty and awkward to cope with but you have managed it very well, Kate.
The girl's smiling face is capturing reflected light from the dog's fur so nicely.
Ronnie.

This is lovely Kate - love the contrast between the white fur and the red hair - the light has settled naturally and reflects off the dog perfectly. Smile
P.S, I think he is a Bichon Frise dog.

Fill-in flash might have been useful, but I like it as is, the only problem seems to be the head of the dog which can be worked using Ps. It's so natural (not the hair, though) and I like the framing and the background as well.

A nice Image Kate I think you can do two things here Kate, Either change your metering system to Spot and/or use your fill in flash as I see your on Multi Segment, try spot for a while and give it a go....John

I would have edited it using the adjustment tool in adobe RAW to make the exposure look correct. But apart from the top of the dogs head I think the picture looks fine. The main focal point of the picture which is her face and hair are illuminated perfectly.WinkGrin
