More accurately, No. 1392 is the last double deck tram to be built in the UK. It is a Cunarder, a post war development of the larger fleet of Coronation trams then running in Glasgow.
This shot was taken in 2009 in the Museum of Transport, then sited in the Kelvin Hall, but the tram has now been relocated to the new Riverside Museum of Transport.

My thank to all who commented on Beauty in the Beechwood.

Ronnie.

You got some surprises in your archives! Many years ince I have last seen a double deck tram.. As kids we were up there like shot, it was a bit difficult for 'elderly' adults to get up there and have an eye on us.

Excellent work, it must have been tricky to expos, the light was certainly not ideal. you manipulation makes it pop.

Love it Ronnie. My wife's grandfather used to work in the tram depot, and Ann as a nipper actually got to "drive" some trams in there. On my first foreignGrin holiday as an eight year old I went from my native Belfast to Scotland on the Glasgow boat and I was thrilled to get to ride on a tram. That was 1960, the year they were withdrawn.

I guess they must have looked like this when they popped out of the fog which used to dog Glasgow and Edinburgh. I'm not sure that I recall the trams in Glasgow I think it might have been the Trolley Buses that had taken over when I came to Glasgow. The Edinburgh trams I do recall maroon & white like all the council trams and buses in Edinburgh, The seats were wooden and flipped over at the terminus when the trams changed direction. There used to be an honesty box on the platform for people who jumped on for a couple of stops and then jumped off again.
There are a million "Clippy" stories from the days of the trams and many of them a bit ribald to tell even here.

When I was a lad, our house looked across part of Hunslet Moor in Leeds towards the old Middleton Railway (as shown by Barbarahirst on here) and alongside ran the tram-track (now part of the M621 motorway Sad). We could see the trams coming long before they got to the stop, so could time it perfectly to catch one into town! They were much more reliable for timekeeping than the buses. Ours were maroon in colour, not as colourful as this fine specimen - your capture and presentation of it here against a mono background is brilliant, Ronnie Smile

Your selective colouring really makes the tram stand out Ronnie. The tram has had a great renovation job done and the colours are excellent. As an apprentice in the 50's I used to travel to night school on a trolley bus, the trams had all disappeared from our area by then, the nearest ones were at Liverpool.
